Child Killed in Rookery Road Accident

An unfortunate road accident happened on Friday morning in Birmingham, which has resulted in a toddler dying in hospital. The accident happened at around 10.15am at the junction of Rookery Road and Mervyn Road in Handsworth.

‘A 3-year-old boy was treated at the scene for serious injuries and was taken to hospital where he died,’ said West Midlands Police. The child has not been formally identified and a post mortem will take place in due course. The toddler’s next of kin have been informed.’

Police said the 26-year-old female driver of a Vauxhall Astra was voluntarily interviewed and would be spoken again to at a later date. Specialist collision investigators attended the scene and Rookery Road was closed while forensic examinations took place.

Rookery Road is a particularly busy road, with anyone familiar to the area knowing that there are cars regularly parked illegally on corners, often resulting in low visibility for both pedestrians and drivers. Sometimes these types of accidents can’t be avoided – particularly for the driver if it involves young children – so it is extremely important to be extremely vigilant.
